THE EXPEDITION
Three islands. Three characters. One asphalt that changes you.
There are beautiful roads. And there are roads that seem to have been created exclusively for motorcyclists. The Great Islands Crossing is born from that idea: cross three of the most legendary islands in the Mediterranean, riding some of the most technical, aggressive and rewarding asphalt on the planet.
In Corsica — considered by many European motorcyclists to be one of the best islands in the world to ride — you find mountains plunging into the Mediterranean, abrasive granite asphalt and infinite curves above cliffs. In Sardinia the island wins you over through rhythm: constant curves, flawless asphalt, continuous flow — the SS125, legendary among motorcyclists worldwide, is the most technical day of the Sardinian phase. In Sicily everything changes again: active volcanoes, millennial history, the legendary Targa Florio and Mount Etna — Europe’s tallest active volcano — combine to create a simply surreal experience.

ITINERARY
12 days across the Mediterranean nobody told you about
Official welcome from the UpSerra team in Genova — one of the greatest maritime republics in European history. Technical briefing, BMW setup and time to explore the historic centre (UNESCO World Heritage). At night: boarding the overnight ferry to Corsica. The adventure begins right there on the Mediterranean.
Disembarkation in Bastia, then straight into it. The route climbs the legendary Cap Corse — Corsica’s “Finger” — an endless sequence of curves above the sea with granite walls on either side. Corsican asphalt is famous among European riders for its abrasive texture and exceptional grip. Then, the Désert des Agriates: a wild, isolated region that feels completely outside Europe.
Crossing the central mountains — passing through Corte, suspended villages, granite walls and narrow roads that vanish into the vegetation. The highlight: the Calanches de Piana (UNESCO): red granite formations where the road winds between rock towers directly above the turquoise sea. One of the most cinematic roads in all of Europe. Overnight in Ajaccio — Napoleon’s birthplace.
Descent down to Bonifacio — a city built on 60m limestone cliffs directly above the sea, one of the most striking in the Mediterranean. Ferry crossing of the Strait of Bonifacio — 12 km separating France from Italy. First kilometers along the Costa Smeralda: crystal-clear water and technical roads revealing a Sardinia completely different from Corsica.
The mountainous interior of the island. Barbagia preserves a primitive, almost untouched Sardinia: empty roads, constant-radius curves and fluid riding all day long. Villages where locals still keep age-old customs, and the nuraghi — Bronze Age stone towers — rise from the fields beside the road. One of the most rewarding days of the whole expedition.
Sardinia’s most technical day. We ride the legendary SS125 — one of the most famous roads in the world among motorcyclists. An absurd sequence of curves with excellent visibility, flawless asphalt and the sea appearing between the mountains. Arrival in Cagliari — Sardinia’s capital, carrying 2,800 years of history in the Castello district.
Free morning in Cagliari — time to rest and wander the city. At night: boarding the overnight ferry to Sicily. The Mediterranean takes on a completely different energy here — the Italian island is an explosive mix of volcanoes, millennial culture and top-tier riding. The biggest phase of the expedition starts here.
Today we ride the roads of the legendary Targa Florio — the most dangerous and iconic road race in the history of world motorsport. Fast curves, mountains and history-laden roads through the Madonie, the massif dominating the island’s northwest. Riding literally over the layout of one of motorsport’s most mythical races.
The expedition’s biggest day. We climb the slopes of Mount Etna — Europe’s tallest active volcano (3,357m). Dark volcanic-lava asphalt, a lunar landscape and curves carved through black rock create a simply surreal experience. On clear days, the smoking crater is visible from inside your helmet. The single most epic moment of the entire trip.
A complete change of scenery. Fluid riding between the historic cities of southeastern Sicily: Ragusa and Modica — UNESCO-listed Baroque towns rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, forming a unique architectural ensemble in the Mediterranean. A perfect blend of road and culture.
The expedition’s final ride. We follow Sicily’s eastern coast to Taormina — one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean, its 3rd-century BC Greek Theatre framed by Etna in the background and the Ionian Sea below. Official closing of the Great Islands Crossing with a special dinner overlooking the sea. It’s hard to describe what 12 days like this do to your state of mind. You’ll understand once you get there.
Free morning. BMW handover and departure to Catania-Fontanarossa Airport — with direct flights or via Rome and Milan. Official closing. Until the next road.

WHO IT’S FOR
Prerequisites
- Valid driver’s license — more specific guidance is provided by the UpSerra team upon confirmation of registration
- Motorcycle touring experience — Technical to Advanced level: 70% technical riding, including Corsica (abrasive asphalt, narrow curves) and Etna (volcanic asphalt, altitude). Ideal for riders who have already completed at least two long-distance international tours
- Valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity beyond the return date — Brazilian citizens do not need a visa for France and Italy (Schengen Area)
- International travel insurance is mandatory for entry into the Schengen Area — it must cover a minimum medical assistance of €34,500 and repatriation
- Full protective gear: approved helmet, armored jacket, pants, gloves and boots — in June the coast is warm (22°C–28°C) but Etna and inland Corsica can drop to 10°C–15°C in the mornings
