Scandinavia 2027 — To the End of Europe
Fjords, Lofoten, North Cape and Lapland in 14 days.
6,429 km on a BMW R1300GS to the northernmost point of Europe.
Scandinavia doesn’t do middle ground. You leave Hamburg, cross Denmark, enter Norway through the most cinematic fjords on the planet — Lysefjord, Geiranger, Trondelag — and just keep going north. Past Bodo, across the ferry to Lofoten, up through Tromsø and Alta until you stand at the North Cape: 71°10′ North, the road literally ends, and below you the Arctic Ocean stretches to the pole. That’s not a metaphor. That’s a coordinate on a motorcycle map. There and back from Hamburg on a single ride — 6,429 km that reset what you consider a trip.
Fourteen days on a BMW R1300GS riding some of the most beautiful roads in the world: Trollstigen, Atlantic Ocean Road, Lærdal Tunnel (the longest road tunnel on Earth), the ferry crossing through the Lofoten islands. The full logistics are UpSerra: hand-picked hotels, support vehicle, experienced guides, professional photography, all tolls and ferries included.
It’s the northernmost tour on the UpSerra calendar. In peak Scandinavian summer, the midnight sun keeps the light from ever going out above the Arctic Circle — you ride with golden-hour light past midnight. That sounds romantic until you do it. Then it becomes one of the few things you’ll never forget.
THE ROUTE
Hamburg → Fjords → Lofoten → North Cape → Hamburg
DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY
14 days. The far north of Europe.
Early departure from Hamburg. Into Denmark, across the Øresund strait, then European motorways into Norway. Long adaptation leg, the Nordic landscapes start to appear. Overnight in Kristiansund.
Short, scenic day. Exploring the Lysefjord — one of the most stunning fjords in Norway, with vertical walls rising straight from the water. Overnight in Lysebotn, at the head of the fjord.
A sequence of legendary natural sights: Latefoss (twin waterfall), Hardanger Bridge (one of the longest suspension bridges in Europe), Vallavik Tunnel and Tvindefossen (another iconic waterfall). Overnight at Vossestolen Hotel.
Lærdal Tunnel — the longest road tunnel in the world (24.5 km, with 3 lit caverns as breaks), Bøyabreen Glacier (impressive glacier visible from the road), Skei, Utvik, and arrival in the Geiranger region. Overnight in Valldal.
Two of the most beautiful roads in the world in a single day: Trollstigen (“the troll road”, 11 hairpins climbing through waterfalls and rock walls) and the Atlantic Ocean Road (the road that hops between islands on arched bridges over the open ocean). Overnight Kristiansund.
Climbing central Norway, the scenery growing wilder. Boreal forests, deep lakes, sparse settlement. Overnight at Trones Namsskogan Family Hotel.
We cross the Arctic Circle. Arrival in Bodo, ferry to Moskenes in the Lofoten archipelago — iconic landscapes of fishing villages, mountains rising straight from the sea, tiny fjords. Overnight in Moskenes.
Crossing the Lofoten archipelago — fjords, picturesque villages, iconic landscapes. Back to the mainland and onward to Bardufoss. Wind, midnight sun starting to show itself.
Full entry into the Arctic region. Alta is one of the first cities in the world to feature prehistoric rock carvings (UNESCO World Heritage). The midnight sun is now constant — you ride in late-afternoon light past midnight.
Nordkapp — the northernmost point of Europe reachable by road, 71°10′ North. Sheer cliff over the Arctic Ocean. The sphere monument at the top, the obligatory photo, a feeling few places in the world deliver: literally the end of the continent.
Down through Finnish Lapland. Endless forests, mirror lakes, Sami people, the unique atmosphere of the European north. Kolari, in north-central Finland, closes the day.
Crossing central Sweden — vast forests, lakes, peaceful landscapes. The longest leg of the tour, medium pace, hypnotic scenery. Sundsvall, on the Baltic coast, is the stop.
Central Sweden along Lake Vättern. Gränna is one of the most charming villages in the country, known for traditional candy (polkagrisar), painted wooden architecture, an atmosphere that looks watercolor-painted.
Final stretch. Crossing Denmark on the way back, return to Germany. Arrival in Hamburg, bike return. Farewell dinner with the group. Flight home the next day.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common questions
Is it cold in Scandinavia in July/August?
Scandinavian summer is the only viable window for this tour. Southern Norway: 18–22°C / 64–72°F. North (North Cape, Lapland): 8–15°C / 46–59°F, with wind. At night at North Cape it can drop to 5°C / 41°F. Layered gear is mandatory. No snow in July, but rain is frequent — a waterproof layer is essential.
Does the midnight sun mess up your sleep?
Above the Arctic Circle in July/August the sun never sets. It’s strange at first — we recommend a sleep mask. The upside: you can ride past 11 pm in late-afternoon light. Hotels above the Arctic Circle have quality blackout curtains.
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
The European rental partner accepts most Category A motorcycle licenses with translation. IDP is recommended for non-EU citizens. A valid passport is always required.
Is the tour technically difficult?
No. Moderate level — the challenge is mileage (several 400+ km days) and duration (14 days). Norwegian roads are very well maintained, excellent asphalt. Trollstigen has 11 zigzag hairpins but is wide and safe. The harder parts are the constant cold and long-trip fatigue, not the riding itself.
Is Norway really as expensive as they say?
Yes. It’s the most expensive destination on the UpSerra calendar. Fuel ~ EUR 2.00–2.30/liter. Simple restaurant meal: EUR 30–50. Decent meal: EUR 50–90. Grocery shopping at hotels with kitchens is an alternative. Budget EUR 1,200–1,800 in fuel + EUR 1,500–2,500 in food for the whole tour.
How does the Lofoten ferry work?
Bodo → Moskenes (Lofoten) is a ~3-hour crossing. The bikes go on the lower deck, secured, and riders move up to the cabin — there’s a café, lounge, panoramic ocean view. The cost is paid directly at boarding and is not included in the package. Worth it as an experience in itself.
How do I get to Hamburg?
Most international flights connect through Frankfurt, Munich or Amsterdam to Hamburg (HAM) — typically 12–14h total from the Americas. Direct flights are rare. Book 4–6 months in advance. HAM airport is 25 min from the city center. Important: arrival needs to be by midday on July 29 — technical bike handover is that afternoon and briefing dinner that night, before the early Day 1 departure.
