PYRENEES SEA TO SEA • MAY 2–12, 2027
Pyrenees Sea to Sea 2027 — Mediterranean to Atlantic by BMW
11 days riding the Pyrenees from Barcelona to San Sebastián and back — Col du Tourmalet, Col d’Aubisque, Cañón de Añisclo, Val d’Aran and the legendary N-260.
1,754 km · Spain & France · BMW R1300GS included.
The Pyrenees have their own logic. It’s not a mountain range you cross in a straight line — it’s a natural wall that demands attention, respect and a wide range of skills. From Barcelona to the Cantabrian Sea and back, Pyrenees Sea to Sea takes you through both sides of this border: the dry, luminous Mediterranean of the east and the green, humid Atlantic of the west. 11 days, 1,754 kilometers, Spain and France — coast to coast.
The route leaves Barcelona and climbs through the Pre-Pyrenees on the mythical N-260 — the Eje Pirenaico — to the Aran Valley and Vielha. From there we cross into France over the Col de Portillon, conquer the Col du Tourmalet (2,115 m — the most legendary mountain in European cycling), descend to Lourdes and return to Spain via the Col d’Aubisque. The heart of the route is in Aínsa — base for two nights in the Aragonese Pyrenees — from where we ride the most technical loop of the trip: the Gistaín Valley and the suspended churches of Tella over the Monte Perdido abyss.
From the Aragonese base, the great crossing of Navarra leads to the Atlantic: San Sebastián, the pearl of the Cantabrian, with its perfect bay, Monte Igueldo and the highest concentration of Michelin stars per square meter in the world. A rest day to breathe, walk and live the pintxos ritual. On the way back to Barcelona, the route passes through Alquézar — a medieval village suspended over the Río Vero Canyon — and closes climbing the Massif of Montserrat, with that final conquest photo and the Mediterranean on the horizon.
Europe-tour format: BMW R1300GS rental in Europe is always included in the price (handover and return at HP Motorrad Barcelona). UpSerra handles hotels, the support vehicle, route planning, bilingual guides and the technical briefing. You bring your motorcycle license and your gear — flight to Barcelona (BCN) is on the rider. Moderate / Advanced level — mountain passes with technical hairpins demand experience handling big bikes on serpentine roads.

DAY 01 · SUN MAY 2 · ARRIVAL
Barcelona — arrival
Arrival in Barcelona, hotel check-in and group introduction at HP Motorrad. BMW handover at the end of the day. Free evening to explore the city — dinner in El Born or Barceloneta to settle into the Catalan rhythm before the two sides of the range.
DAY 02 · MON MAY 3 · 324 KM · N-260
Barcelona → Vielha
From urban to spectacular. Out of Barcelona via C-16 to clear the metropolitan area, then the technical asphalt of C-14. The riding evolves into the mythical N-260 — Eje Pirenaico — impeccable asphalt with medium-radius curves that invite progressive lean. Lunch at La Seu d’Urgell with views of the Sierra del Cadí. The final stretch between Sort and El Pont de Suert is the day’s filet mignon, with curve sequences designed for big trails. Arrival at Val d’Aran through the Vielha Tunnel: you emerge into a green valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks and stone-and-slate alpine architecture.
DAY 03 · TUE MAY 4 · 160 KM · COL DU TOURMALET
Vielha → Lourdes
The day you’ll never forget. Out of Vielha north to face the Col de Portillon, a technical climb that crosses into France via Bagnères-de-Luchon. The riding becomes an epic sequence: the flowing Col de Peyresourde, the panoramic Col d’Aspin, and finally the majestic Col du Tourmalet (2,115 m) — the mountain that defines European altitude motorcycling. At the top: photo with the “Giant” statue and 360° view of the range. Lunch in Arreau, postcard French village. Overnight in Lourdes, on the banks of the Gave River.
DAY 04 · WED MAY 5 · 200 KM · COL D’AUBISQUE + AÑISCLO
Lourdes → Aínsa
From French rock balconies to the deep gorges of Aragón. Climb to the Col d’Aubisque (D918), where the road is carved into a vertical wall known as Cirque du Litor. Return to Spain via the Col du Pourtalet and steady pace on N-260 to Broto. The climax: the HU-631 in the Cañón de Añisclo, narrow one-way road snaking under millennial rocks of Ordesa National Park, with reddish limestone walls and turquoise river. Lunch in Biescas, classic motorcyclist stop. Overnight in medieval Aínsa — first of two nights in the walled village overlooking the Mediano reservoir.
DAY 05 · THU MAY 6 · 115 KM · ARAGONESE LOOP
Aínsa — Aragonese Pyrenees Loop
No luggage, just you and the bike. Out of Aínsa climbing the Cinca River valley to Plan and the detour to the Gistaín Valley — one of the best-kept secrets of the range, with alpine meadows and snow-capped peaks. The technical stretch between Gistaín and the return via Tella offers hairpin sequences with dramatic aerial views. Highlight: the “balcony” of Tella, where three small Romanesque churches seem to balance over the abyss, with 360° view of Monte Perdido (3,355 m). Rustic lunch in Plan, famous for hospitality and artisan cured meats. Second night in Aínsa.
DAY 06 · FRI MAY 7 · 347 KM · ATLANTIC
Aínsa → San Sebastián
From the arid mountains of Aragón to the wet forests of the Atlantic. Out via N-260 and N-240 along the Yesa reservoir to Jaca. Technical highlight: climb via Aoiz and Agoitz on secondary roads winding through the dense forests of Navarra. Lunch in Pamplona, world-famous city, for a Basque tapas experience. Final arrival is cinematic: as the route approaches San Sebastián, dry mountain air gives way to humid Atlantic breeze, and the Bay of La Concha appears on the horizon. First of two nights in the “pearl of the Cantabrian.”
DAY 07 · SAT MAY 8 · DAY OFF · SAN SEBASTIÁN
San Sebastián — rest day
Optional alarm clock. After six intense days crossing the Pyrenees, San Sebastián offers the perfect refuge. The group walks the famous Playa de la Concha, considered one of the most beautiful urban beaches in Europe. Climb to Monte Igueldo via funicular for the trip’s definitive panoramic photo — the entire shell-shaped bay, Santa Clara Island and the Atlantic horizon. Day’s highlight: the pintxos ritual — miniature gastronomic artworks, bar to bar through the Parte Vieja, paired with Txakoli or Basque cider. The city with the highest concentration of Michelin stars per square meter in the world, at your disposal.
DAY 08 · SUN MAY 9 · 341 KM · NAVARRA + ALQUÉZAR
San Sebastián → Alquézar
Total scenery change. Out of San Sebastián descending to Pamplona and crossing the interior of Navarra via the Olite route — passing the Royal Castle and plains reminiscent of European westerns. Major highlight: the final stretch climbing into the Sierra de Guara, where Aragón’s rock formations reveal themselves progressively. Lunch in Olite, famous for asparagus and Navarrese meats. Sunset arrival at Alquézar — medieval gem suspended over the Río Vero Canyon, with the Colegiada lit by the low sun. The last rustic night before returning to Barcelona.
DAY 09 · MON MAY 10 · 267 KM · MONTSERRAT
Alquézar → Barcelona via Montserrat
The last chapter. Out of Alquézar east via A-22 and A-2, cruising through the Lleida plains. The technical climax happens in the last 60 km: we leave the highway to climb the Massif of Montserrat via BP-1103 — a labyrinth of perfect curves on track-quality asphalt. From the abbey, the group sees the Mediterranean — the same sea we left 9 days ago, now seen from a perspective of total conquest. Light lunch in the Catalan interior. Final toast reserved for the farewell dinner in Barcelona. Afternoon arrival for bike return at HP Motorrad.
DAY 10 · TUE MAY 11 · CLOSING

Frequently asked questions
Which airport — Barcelona (BCN)?
Yes — fly into Barcelona BCN by D1 (May 2, 2027). The tour starts and ends in Barcelona, so the same airport works for arrival and departure. UpSerra meets at the hotel; the BMW handover happens at HP Motorrad on D1.
How does the BMW R1300GS rental work?
UpSerra rents the BMW R1300GS in Europe through HP Motorrad Barcelona. The bike is included in the package — you don’t pay separately. Comprehensive insurance, registration and roadside assistance are part of the rental. Refundable damage deposit at handover, around EUR 1,500.
What’s the weather like in early May in the Pyrenees?
Spring in the Pyrenees — one of the best windows of the year. 8-22°C across most of the route. Mountain pass days (Tourmalet, Aubisque) can drop to 2-8°C at the summit. Possibility of snow on the highest passes. The Atlantic side (San Sebastián) is mild and humid. Layered gear with rain jacket required, plus warm gloves for the passes.
How tough is this tour?
Moderate / Advanced level. Mountain pass riding with hairpin sequences (Tourmalet, Aubisque, Portillon, BP-1103 to Montserrat). The Cañón de Añisclo section (HU-631) is technical with narrow lanes. For experienced riders comfortable on big bikes (700cc+) on serpentine mountain roads. Big-bike experience is required, not a first European tour for inexperienced riders.
Do I need an international driver’s license?
International permit recommended. EU category-A licenses accepted natively in Spain and France. Brazilian / non-EU licenses with valid passport accepted with international permit translation. UpSerra advises during pre-trip preparation.
Will the snow on the Tourmalet be an issue in May?
Col du Tourmalet (2,115 m) typically opens to traffic in mid-April after winter closure. By early May, the road is usually fully clear, though snow walls along the road are common. UpSerra monitors the pass status and has a logistical Plan B (alternative pass) if conditions are unsafe.
