Frequently asked questions
How does the BR/UY/AR border crossing work?
3 borders on this route: BR→UY (Chuí, D2), UY→AR (Colonia ferry, D6), AR→BR (Paso de los Libres, D14). UpSerra organizes all advance paperwork. ID/passport, motorcycle license, CRLV and Green Card insurance are mandatory if bringing own bike.
How does the Colonia → Argentina ferry work?
The Buquebus ferry crossing from Colonia del Sacramento to Buenos Aires takes ~1.5h. UpSerra books in advance. Approximate cost: USD 80 per rider including motorcycle. The crossing is comfortable and the bikes are properly secured.
What’s the weather like in April 2027?
Late southern autumn. Brazil and Uruguay coast: 14-22°C, mild and pleasant. Argentine pampa: 10-22°C. Mendoza: 8-22°C, vineyards in golden harvest colors. Cordillera at Potrerillos: 0-12°C, possibility of frost in the mornings. Layered gear required.
How tough is this tour?
Moderate level. 100% asphalt, comfortable averages, two longer single days (D6 with 695 km and D14 with 860 km on the closing). The Cordillera section at Potrerillos has winding mountain roads but no extreme altitude. For riders comfortable on big bikes who have done long routes before.
I don’t have an adequate bike — can I rent?
Yes. UpSerra runs a fleet of BMW R1300GS prepared for South American expeditions. Rental adds ~USD 4,000 over the own-bike price and covers a ready-to-go bike, up-to-date maintenance, mechanical support from the chase vehicle, and the bike waiting for you in Urubici on D1.
I don’t drink alcohol — does the tour still work?
Absolutely. The wine experiences (Bodega Garzón, Mendoza vineyards) are part of the cultural and gastronomic program — non-drinkers can enjoy the landscapes, architecture, paired food (without wine), and the unique atmosphere. Many participants choose to taste sparingly without compromising the riding the next day.
