    BALKANS · SEPTEMBER 5–16, 2027

    Balkans 2027 — Adriatic & Carpathians

Grossglockner, Plitvice, Hvar, Dubrovnik, Kotor and Sarajevo in 12 days.
2,530 km across 6 Eastern European countries.

The Balkans are the Europe that hasn’t been tamed yet. You leave Munich through the Austrian Alps, climb the Grossglockner, cross Slovenia and dive into Croatia through the Plitvice Lakes. Then comes the Adriatic coast — one of the most beautiful roads on the continent — passing through Šibenik, Split, Hvar (ferry to the island), Makarska and Dubrovnik. Walled cities, paradise islands, vineyards by the sea.

Twelve days, 2,530 km, crossing six countries: Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia. The Balkans deliver what other European tours can’t — the Kotor Serpentine with 25 zigzag turns, the Tara Canyon (the second deepest in the world), Sarajevo with its layered history, and Mostar with the bridge that connects two religions and three empires. All of it on a touring bike, with the UpSerra team and the curation of a route that doesn’t exist in any standard catalog.

September is the month. The Adriatic still warm, the Alps already cool, the high-summer tourists gone. Twelve days that mix the most cinematic asphalt in Europe with cities the rest of the continent prefers to forget — and that’s exactly why they’re worth visiting on a motorcycle.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Common questions

Is it hard to ride through the Balkans?

Moderate level. Good asphalt on most of the route. The Kotor Serpentines (25 turns) and Grossglockner are the most technical stretches — they require comfort in tight zigzag turns. Adriatic coastal stretches (D8) are wide, cinematic curves. Crossing multiple borders is part of the experience — UpSerra organizes everything, but it takes time.

Is it cold in September in the Balkans?

September is one of the best months — mild temperatures, fewer tourists than peak summer. Adriatic coast 22–28°C / 72–82°F. Mountains (Grossglockner, Durmitor): 12–18°C / 54–64°F during the day, 5–8°C / 41–46°F in morning/night. Layered gear is ideal. Rain is less frequent than in July/August.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

The European rental partner accepts most Category A motorcycle licenses with translation. IDP is recommended for non-EU citizens. A valid passport is always required.

How do the borders work in the Balkans?

The tour crosses 6 international borders — Germany → Austria → Slovenia → Croatia → Bosnia → Montenegro → Croatia → Bosnia → Italy → Germany. Some are intra-EU (fast), others (Bosnia, Montenegro) are outside the EU and require a small wait. UpSerra advises on documentation and organizes stops. In general, each crossing takes 15–45 minutes.

    How does insurance work?

International travel insurance (NOT included): arranged by the rider, with medical, repatriation and baggage coverage. We recommend Allianz, Assist Card or similar — roughly EUR 50–90 for 14 days in Europe. Motorcycle insurance (NOT included): directly with the European rental company (CDW to reduce the deductible). UpSerra advises at the time of contracting.

    Is Hvar worth the ferry?

Absolutely. Hvar is one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. The free day there (D6) is designed for you to rest, hit the beach, eat Croatian food, optionally take a boat to the Pakleni Islands. Those who’ve never been leave wanting to come back — Hvar is a destination in itself.

How do I get to Munich?

Most international flights connect through Frankfurt, Paris, Madrid or Amsterdam. Book 4–6 months in advance. MUC airport is 40 min from the city center. Important: arrival needs to be by midday on Sept 4 — technical bike handover is that afternoon and briefing dinner that night, before the early Day 1 departure.
